Yet another Bali trip

20 Sep

Second trip to Bali, with my lovely wife. This time we stayed in Le Meridien Hotel, Jimbaran. We were lucky to get a hotel voucher as a wedding gift. 4 days and 3 nights for free!

Not much happening except chilling by the pool at some fancy beach club, and drinking fancy mocktails. We went to old time favorite Potato Head Beach Club, and Sundara Beach Club. Dine out with Gary, (this handsome dude I knew when I was still in NZ) at some Japanese restaurant. The fact that he works at Padma Hotel makes him aware of good restaurant to recommend to guest.. so yeah, the japanese restaurant was good (but expensive :D)

Went to Gardin Secret restaurant at Seminyak too, which has a very fancy-looking nightclub at the back. the restaurant and the clubs overall architecture looks like a church, with pointy roof, mosaic glasses, high ceiling.. highly recommended place.

Also had lunch at Sisterhood. nice food, pleasant atmosphere, friendly waiters. Possibly one of the most Path-ed location for all my Indonesian friends currently on holiday in Bali. Where else did we go?

Oh, the seafood place next to our hotel. Our favorite is Menega Cafe. Fresh seafood, by the beach, with the sun setting behind you and your significant other.. just perfect.

OK, enough. Give me shout if you have any questions. Enjoy the photos 🙂

Bali Trip – Honeymoon!

23 May

Well, this is my 3rd Bali trip. This time with my wife 🙂

The first few days we stayed in a Villa in Seminyak with a few of her friends from US and Japan. Cant remember the name of the Villa we stayed. But its big.

Three bedrooms, with swimming pool, jacuzzi at the top, a large dining table, a kitchen, and even maids who cooks our breakfast! 10 minutes walk to the nearest beach, and to Seminyak Road, where there are plenty of shops and restaurants and cafes during the day, and bars, and clubs at night.

We rented a car plus the driver to take us around. Visited a few beach clubs in the area, we had dinner by the sea with fantastic seafood, the girls getting a hair treatment while I’m busy snapping photos, and so on

Starting on the fourth day we part ways with our Japanese frineds, and stayed just the two of us in Ubud, at Komaneka Bisma. The Hotel (Komaneka Bisma) offered a shuttle service that pick us up at the Seminyak Villa. On our way to Ubud, the driver stops at four places:
1) a jewelery shop, 100% hand-made made of silver
2) a local art gallery, where local artist displays their paintings. We end up buying one for our new house..
3) a sculpture gallery, mostly made of woods. We didnt stay very long here because its kinda creepy. But we did bought something small
4) a Batik place, where Balinese batik is being hand drawn and sold

Then, we arrived at Komaneka Bisma hotel. The place is very secluded, you wont notice from the main street that this place exists.. very unassuming. Located in central Ubud, the hotel is strategically placed, some famous place in Ubud is within walking distance, like Ubud Market, the venue for Balinese traditional dance performance. Plus Komaneka has its own shuttle service that stops at several spots around Ubud, and it goes all day till very late at night.

The hotel itself is designed as an escape from the Urban life. Our room has a view of the Hotel’s own paddy field. We can even walk around the paddy field! Plus the pool, the free afternoon tea and snacks, gym, and a complimentary 60 minutes (or was it 90 minutes) massage. Oh, the massage place is one of the best I have ever been. Located a bit further down into the forest, about 7 minutes walk from our room. It has a jacuzzi for two, an open space, and a real river running below. the sound of the water running while getting a full body massage is very soothing. Extremely recommended! Too bad I didnt bring my camera (even my phone) with me.

I think thats about it for this post. Enjoy the photos 🙂

Bali, again!!!

6 May

My second trip to Bali was on December last year. This trip was also work related.

I got to stay in Bali for two days.. Found this nice restaurant in Seminyak called Gardin Bistro. I think this restaurant is quite new in the neighborhood. The interior is very interesting, its like a combination of a church and a green house. But they got it. the atmosphere is very cozy, and the food is delicious!

From here, I walked my way down to my Hotel near the airport along the beach. Too bad it starts raining so I had to take a Taxi. But I did manage to check out some of the beachclubs like “W”, Potato head, and a few others.

The next day, I went to Nusa Dua area, and I found this unique place called The Pirates Bay. The place is made to feel like a hangout place for pirates. They got tree house, hammock, tents, and even a real ship! the beach here are not crowded like in Kuta, and the beach is cleaner too! This area is surrounded by hotels, so lots of tourist walking by.

This place is definitely a place you want to go for a family vacation.. Unfortunately, you cannot catch sunset in here.

I’ll post my third Bali trip soon. This time, with my wife! 🙂

Aiky and Rara’s Pengajian

4 Jan

I’ve no idea what “Pengajian” is in English.. its a ritual, well not a ritual.. its uhmmm, something we do as a Muslim before we get married (in Indonesia at least, not sure about Muslim in other countries).

For this event, I am only taking photos for Pengajian at Rara’s place, the bride’s place. It goes like this: the bride’s family, gather around with another group of people specializing for Pengajian, like twenty or so people, mostly elders, people from the neighborhood who knew / close to this family. The group starts by reciting some part of the Holy Qur’an, focusing on the part about marriage. They recited the verses in Arabic.. After that, someone from the group translated the verses to Indonesian language. They handed out small books already containing the Qur’an verses, the prayers, and its translations word by word. so people who do not know how to read Arabic, can just read the small book and go with the flow

Next, the elders and the parents then gave advice to the bride about married life, what it means to be a husband / wife.

Next, then say some prayers wishing the couples to be happy, blessed, good fortunes, stay faithful to each other and to God, wealthy, raise kids, etc etc.

Then after that, they shake each other hands, then we all eat.

and.. finish.

Each Pengajian is different, depending on which part of Indonesia, but in general it goes something like the above. Usually it takes about two hours to complete. Some Pengajian goes even longer, because of adding up extra / traditional / cultural ceremonies. For example, maybe the groom / bride wanted to say thanks and ask for forgiveness from their parents before they start their journey raising their own new family.

Anyway, here are the photos. I’ll try to add some captions for each photos as I go. Enjoy!

Sasa’s 7 Months Baby Shower

6 Oct

This is Sasa’s Baby shower.

The baby shower ritual is done in traditional Javanese, when the pregnancy is about 7 months. Sasa’s parents invited a group of people around the neighborhood, mostly women in their late 40s.
First, the group start to read some verses from the Al-Qur’an (Holy Koran). Then, they continue with the Do’a (the pray, which is mostly aimed for the future Mum, but also the husbnad, the family, the relatives, etc.)

Once that parts done, we proceed to eat, and socialize. There’s the ‘nasi tumpeng’, a dish served in a large, flat, woven basket, with yellow rice shaped like a cone, plus several side dishes. no pork, all Halal heheheh..

Sasa went in and change clothes, from the white gown to the pink baby shower dress. There’s already a place specially set up for the ceremony, just at the car port. Woven mat, wooden chair, the kain Batik hanging as the background. She sat on the chair, then 7 person, one by one, starts showering her a few times. Start with her parents, the in-laws, some relatives, and at the end, her husband.

They continue with a few traditional ceremony (like the coconut-chopping, the egg- dropping, the wife got wrapped in Batik clothes, etc etc), and its done. Each part represents something.. was too busy taking photos, so didnt paid enough attention to the MC, when she’s explaining what each part is all about. Go check out on Google if you want to know more about the Javanese Baby shower.

For those curious about Batik, a friend of mine is running a website dedicated for this beautiful indonesian cloth, too bad its in Indonesian. But she still accept and reply emails in English 🙂 Check it out http://ceritakain.com

Enjoy the photos
